Yes, but not as freely as we are used to.\u00a0During our\u00a0three week\u00a0trip,\u00a0we\u00a0logged on to the internet and WiFi in Cuba\u00a0six times. WiFi access in Cuba\u00a0differs to\u00a0<strong>access<\/strong> in Europe \/ USA \/ most of the rest of the world because:<\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5>There is no free WiFi in Cuba \u2013 it is expensive<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Internet access in Cuba\u00a0is restricted<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Cuba is\u00a0a great holiday destination but still a communist country<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5><strong>How to Get Internet and WiFi in Cuba<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>To gain access to WiFi in Cuba,\u00a0purchase a <strong>card<\/strong> from a ETECSA telecommunications centreor a hotel which has WiFi accessibility. The card should cost 4.50 CUC \/ $4.50 \/ \u00a32.93 and gives you one hour of online internet access in Cuba.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>ETECSA Telecommunications Centre v Hotel<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>Not all towns have a ETECSA telecommunications centre and not all hotels have WiFi. You\u2019ll spot the ETECSA centre because there will be a line of locals <strong>queuing<\/strong> or leaning against the wall. <strong>Gringos<\/strong> don\u2019t have to queue for some reason so if you can get over the<strong>embarrassment<\/strong> you can shuffle past the line of locals. There will also be a massive <strong>pylon<\/strong>on top of the centre. <strong>*<\/strong>Update, this rule doesn\u2019t apply for Havana\u2019s Obispo street centre, we were <strong>snubbed<\/strong> and made to join the line which is fair play. There are also computers for use (with the card) in the\u00a0ETECSA telecommunications centres.<\/h5>\n<h5>Update: WiFi in Cuba 2016 \/ 2015<\/h5>\n<h5>As of 2015, the ETECSA\u00a0has opened eight\u00a0Pay \u2013 For WiFi Hotspots\u00a0across parks all over the island\u00a0at a cost of 2 CUC per hour.<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Pinar del Rio<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Cienfuegos<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Ciego de Avila<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Las Tunas, Matanzas<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Villa Clara<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Mayabeque<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Sancti Spiritus<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Have you seen any, tell us about it in the comments below, we\u2019re excited!<\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ETECSA-Vinvale-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ETECSA-Vinvale-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"internet in pinar del rio cuba\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ETECSA-Vinvale-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/ETECSA-Vinvale-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5>Hotels\u00a0With Internet Access in Cuba<\/h5>\n<h5>The more <strong>expensive hotels<\/strong>\u00a0in the likes of Havana and Trinidad, tend to sell the cards but you must buy a <strong>drink<\/strong> with it so your 4.50 CUC card for one hour of WiFi becomes 7.50 CU. If you add a drink charge to it (the hot chocolate in Iberostar, Trinidad is lovely though and the <strong>air con<\/strong> is desirable). This <strong>rule<\/strong> is per card so if you buy two cards you are required to purchase two drinks. <strong>Wow<\/strong>, different story in Havana! Hotel Sevilla charges 8 CUC \/ \u00a35.23, don\u2019t be a <strong>mug<\/strong>! You use the same card so buy one at the centre if you can afford the time and just use it in the lobby (we weren\u2019t questioned when we did this). <strong>Fun fact<\/strong> \u2013 this hotel has a <strong>pool<\/strong> that <strong>cheapos<\/strong> like us can use for 15 CUC \/ \u00a39.81 (you get 12 of this back to use as credit at the bar). Iberostar Parque Central is <strong>not as\u00a0kind<\/strong> than the one in Trinidad, non-residents have to use the business centre, they obviously don\u2019t want the <strong>riff raff<\/strong> messing up the mugs.<\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hotel-Sevilla-Havana-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-246 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hotel-Sevilla-Havana-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"vacation in cuba\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hotel-Sevilla-Havana-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Hotel-Sevilla-Havana-I-Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-768x576-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>One Hour Card v Thirty Minutes<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>The ETECSA telecommunications centre in Havana advised that you can\u2019t use the thirty minutes cards (which are <strong>white<\/strong>) in hotels, they said it was for PCs in the telecommunication centre only and that the one hour cards (<strong>blue<\/strong>) were for hotel WiFi. This is <strong>untrue<\/strong> in our experience; we used both the white and blue cards in hotels for both WiFi and PC use. However, it may be a government <strong>rule<\/strong> they have to follow.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Cuba WiFi Access and Quality\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>Accessibility is not only restricted\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>where<\/strong> you log on but the\u00a0<b>strength<\/b>\u00a0of the WiFi is not always great. It\u2019s often <strong>slow<\/strong> and can stop working. Apparently it had been <strong>down<\/strong> for four days in Cienfuegos. I did <strong>lose<\/strong> a lot of time online because the network dropped and I could not log out. In Trinidad,\u00a0Iberostar showed <strong>excellent customer service\u00a0<\/strong>and gave me my money back. I\u2019m <strong>doubtful<\/strong> this would happen in the telecommunication centre! When we tried to use Iberostar in Havana we were told that the WiFi was playing up in the business centre.<\/h5>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-I-Trinidad-768x605.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-249 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-I-Trinidad-768x605.jpg\" alt=\"quality of internet access in cuba\" width=\"768\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-I-Trinidad-768x605.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hablax.com\/publicaciones\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Internet-and-WiFi-in-Cuba-I-Trinidad-768x605-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>How to Log On Using Nauta WiFi<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>The card has a log on <strong>code<\/strong> and <strong>password<\/strong> which you score off. When you select the<strong>network<\/strong> you will be asked for these. Type both in and hit <strong>accept<\/strong> then <strong>done<\/strong>. That should be you online.<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>How to Log Off\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Using Nauta WiFi<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>Type <strong>1.1.1.1<\/strong> into the search bar (if it takes you to a Google search of 1.1.1.1 ignore this and try again). Here you request to log off and click \u2018<strong>cerrar sesi\u00f3n<\/strong>\u2019. A man was trying to <strong>sell<\/strong> us cards outside the centre in Havana, no thanks pal!<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>Time Saver Tips \u2013 Before<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Before you <strong>fly<\/strong> to Cuba, copy and paste information from online (Two Scots Abroad\u2018sCuba backlog obvs) into an email and\u00a0email it to yourself. Make sure you <strong>open<\/strong> them when you have WiFi at <strong>home<\/strong> and they should be in your account ready to <strong>refer<\/strong> to<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Screen print<\/strong> Tripadvisors suggested restaurants! Remember to scroll down so you capture the <strong>address<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Time Saver Tips \u2013 During<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Write a list of <strong>priorities<\/strong> before you log on so you don\u2019t get <strong>sucked<\/strong> into Facebook\u00a0<strong>stalking<\/strong> (thanks to Sam for this tip)<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Type<\/strong> messages into your <strong>notes<\/strong> app and then copy and paste over to your email, text, Whatsapp. This will <strong>save<\/strong> you time<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Edit <strong>photos<\/strong> using offline apps before posting \/ emailing<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Set the <strong>timer<\/strong> on your phone as soon as you log on. Time flies when you are having fun<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Or be like me and <strong>embrace<\/strong> the holiday away from social networking, blogging and emails!<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Places With WiFi in Cuba<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>Here is a list of the known places where you can access WiFi in Cuba. If there are any that I have missed, do tell us and I will add. This is when travellers stay with locals as opposed to hotels or hostels.
